Just like in Luxembourg, the new school year is about to begin in Togo. Over the past few years, the country has made remarkable progress: today, almost 98% of primary school-age children are enrolled in school. Yet being in school does not always mean being able to learn. Around 82% of 10-year-olds are still unable to read and understand a simple text appropriate for their age.
Giving children the foundations they need to succeed
Together with our partners, we are working to improve the quality of education and strengthen foundational learning in Togo. Our goal is to ensure that every child acquires the essential knowledge and skills they need from the very first years of school to continue learning, build their future and reach their full potential.
UNICEF-supported activities include:
- providing school supplies for children from vulnerable families
- strengthening early childhood education to prepare children for school
- improving foundational literacy and numeracy skills
- training and supporting teachers with child-centred teaching approaches
- mobilising families and communities to encourage school enrolment and attendance
- promoting girls’ education, inclusion and child protection
- supporting safe and inclusive learning environments.
Education opens the door to a brighter future
Quality education helps children gain knowledge, confidence and essential life skills. It gives them greater opportunities to shape their future, achieve their dreams and, in the long term, helps reduce inequalities.
