As summer draws to a close in Luxembourg, children eagerly prepare to reunite with friends and embark on a new school year filled with learning and discovery. Unfortunately, millions of children worldwide are denied this basic opportunity, lacking access to education that could transform their futures.
The Global Education Crisis
In low- and middle-income countries, nearly two-thirds of children are unable to read a simple sentence. Shockingly, 250 million children worldwide are not enrolled in school. Among those who are, many receive substandard education due to systemic issues.
Barriers to Quality Education
Countless children face significant barriers to education, including conflicts, inadequate infrastructure, poverty, and gender inequalities. The lack of trained teachers, insufficient teaching materials, and outdated educational methods further compound the crisis, leaving millions without a pathway to a better future.
UNICEF’s mission: Education for every child
UNICEF is dedicated to breaking down these barriers, ensuring every child has safe and equitable access to quality education. Regardless of their background, socio-economic status, gender, or disability, every child deserves a chance to learn.

Hélène’s Story: A Glimpse into the Impact of Your Support
Hélène, a 9-year-old girl, was once one of the top students in her class. But last year, she couldn’t attend school due to a lack of space. Her dream of returning to school seemed out of reach.
Thanks to UNICEF and its partners, temporary learning spaces were created in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, allowing Hélène and many others to resume their education. These spaces not only provide education but also offer a sense of normalcy amidst instability. UNICEF also supplies essential school materials and trains teachers in child protection and psychosocial support.

“Today there are 250 million children out of school – an increase of 6 million since 2021. These include 100 million children on the African continent. For one child this is a tragedy, for a country it is a generational catastrophe.”
