On 28 March 2025, powerful earthquakes struck Myanmar, worsening one of the world’s most complex humanitarian crises. Even before the disaster, more than 6,5 million children were in need of humanitarian assistance.
The catastrophe caused thousands of deaths and injuries. Within minutes, countless children lost their loved ones and any sense of stability. Houses, schools and hospitals were destroyed, depriving entire families of shelter, resources and access to essential services.
“This earthquake is another brutal blow to children in Myanmar – many of whom were already living through conflict, displacement, and deprivation. In minutes, they lost loved ones, homes, and access to essential services. The needs are massive.”
Catherine Russell, UNICEF Executive Director
UNICEF is on the ground
Thanks to its long-standing presence in Myanmar, UNICEF was able to respond immediately after the earthquakes. Since the disaster, our teams have been working tirelessly to deliver life-saving supplies and restore access to vital services, including:
- Clean drinking water and hygiene kits, to prevent the spread of disease;
- Tents and tarpaulins, to shelter families left homeless;
- Medical and nutritional assistance, to treat the injured and protect the most vulnerable children;
- Psychosocial support, to help children cope with trauma;
- Safe spaces for children separated from their families, to protect them from violence and exploitation.
We have already delivered extensive support in Myanmar. But the needs remain overwhelming, and we must scale up our response.

UNICEF provides vital aid to affected families.
Psychosocial support: healing invisible wounds
Even weeks after the earthquakes, many children in Myanmar live in constant insecurity, haunted by fear, grief and loss. Without the right help, their wounds can last a lifetime. In our child-friendly safe spaces, we provide essential psychosocial support and a range of activities. Children can play, begin to express their emotions and start healing – a first step towards rebuilding normal life.
Your donation can save lives
By making a donation today, you enable UNICEF to quickly provide vital aid to the most affected children. For over seven decades, UNICEF has been committed to the children of Myanmar, notably in the areas of nutrition, education, health, water supply and child protection. Last year alone, UNICEF helped 500.000 children get vaccinated against measles, provided access to education for over 520.000 children, and supplied drinking water to around 709.000 people.
