Naya, who fled her home due to the earthquake, uses drawing as a way to express her emotions, and this activity, along with others, are provided by a UNICEF-supported partner at the shelter.
The children are encouraged to express themselves and their feelings through these recreational activities. Despite the challenging circumstances, these activities provide a much-needed sense of normalcy and stability for children like Naya, who currently lives at the shelter with her mother and brother.
“I was only scared when my mom left me to look for my brother. She wanted to find him so that we could escape together from the earthquake,” Naya recalls about the earthquake. Naya's brother has a mental disability, and his care requires a lot of her mother's time.
Naya is now accustomed to life in the shelter, but she still misses her old home. “I like to bake and used to bake at my home. Here we can’t bake. We don’t have the ingredients or an oven,” said Naya at the shelter in Stamo village in Lattakia governorate on 20 February.
Children and families in many governorates in Syria are living in extremely difficult conditions as a result of the devastating earthquakes that hit Syria. Children here continue to face one of the most complex humanitarian situations in the world. A worsening economic crisis, continued localized hostilities after more than a decade of grinding conflict, mass displacement and overwhelmed public infrastructure have left two-thirds of the population in need of assistance. Food insecurity, dependence on unreliable and alternative water sources, protection concerns, and high levels of school dropouts are prevalent. © UNICEF/UN0792084/Haddad 8 8 8 125 Jt
