In Sudan, the war has been raging for over a year, causing disastrous consequences: nearly 14 million children are in urgent need of humanitarian aid. Numerous people have been displaced and are suffering from hunger, making this displacement crisis the worst in the world, with over 4,6 million children displaced. The situation risks extending into the worst hunger crisis, with 730.000 children at risk of dying from starvation.
For 20 years, the food situation in Sudan has never been as acute. Nearly 9 million children suffer from severe food insecurity and do not have access to clean water. Approximately 4 million children under the age of 5 will suffer from malnutrition this year, including 730.000 with severe acute malnutrition, the deadliest form.

Prevention Campaigns
We also implement various prevention campaigns. These campaigns show parents the best feeding practices, explain how to ensure their children receive all necessary nutrients, and provide essential information and tools for growing their own vegetables.

Impact Since the Beginning of the Conflict
Since the beginning of the conflict, UNICEF has made considerable efforts: 15.500 tons of relief supplies have been delivered, 5,5 million children have been screened for malnutrition, and over 322.000 severely malnourished children have received life-saving treatments.
The Reasons for Hunger in Sudan
Several factors are responsible for the current food crisis in Sudan:
- War and Violence: Conflicts kill primary breadwinners, and many homes are looted.. Agricultural production collapses, rendering families unable to meet their needs.
- Displacement: Multiple displacements force families to abandon their livelihoods. Often arriving malnourished in refugee camps, they find food supplies scarce.
- Economic Crisis: Even before the war, Sudan faced an economic crisis. Inflation has driven up the prices of basic food items by 300%, making it impossible for many families to buy food.
- Droughts and Floods: Climate change causes droughts and floods, destroying crops and livestock. This continues to drive up food prices.
We need your help
“The war is creating a lethal combination of displacement, disease and hunger – the perfect storm for a conflict-induced famine and the catastrophic loss of children’s lives. Children do not start wars, but they pay the highest price. We need the world to know what is happening to the children of Sudan and insist that all parties stop the violence and end this war.”
